Domaine Dufour

Domaine Dufour

Domaine Dufour is a family-owned estate rooted in the heart of the Beaujolais region, nestled between Mâcon and Lyon on the border with the Mâconnais, at the foot of Mont Brouilly. The domaine is based in the commune of Régnié-Durette, a setting that places it squarely among Beaujolais' most characterful crus. Across a focused range of three wines — a Beaujolais Blanc and two reds from the crus of Brouilly and Régnié — Domaine Dufour produces wines that speak clearly of their origins: granite hillsides, enclosed parcels with their own microclimate, and a winemaking hand that favors precision over spectacle. Under the stewardship of Florent, the domaine is evolving steadily, pursuing a path toward reduced agrochemical reliance and a more intimate relationship with the land it has worked across two generations.

Domaine Dufour — Beaujolais

Terroir

Domaine Dufour draws from several distinct terroirs across the Beaujolais landscape. The domaine's home ground is the commune of Régnié-Durette, from which the Régnié Clos de Ponchon emerges. The clos designation is earned: the vineyard parcels grow within an enclosed space surrounding the Château de Ponchon, creating what the domaine describes as a pressure-cooker effect — a sheltered microclimate that protects the vines from the exposure and wind they would suffer on an open plateau, delivering an optimal ripeness and concentration in the fruit. The Brouilly comes from the appellation of the same name, a broad cru of approximately 1,200 hectares radiating from the slopes of Mont Brouilly. Within it, the lieu-dit Pisse-Vieille — recognized by the INAO for its specific orientation, gradient, and microclimate — covers roughly 20 hectares. The name itself is steeped in Beaujolais folklore: legend holds that it derives from an encounter in a village hamlet, a tale the domaine recounts with characteristic warmth. The Beaujolais Blanc originates from a separate parcel at Salar Bussona, in the southern reaches of the appellation near Villefranche-sur-Saône. Planted on hillside slopes of granite, these vines yield the pronounced minerality that defines the wine. Domaine Dufour is, notably, the sole vigneron working this precise spot.

Vinification

The vinification at Domaine Dufour reflects a philosophy of restraint and patience. For the Régnié Clos de Ponchon, the wine undergoes a short élevage of six to eight months in used oak barrels following vinification. The deliberate choice of used barrels is telling: the goal is to introduce a quiet woodiness — a structural complement rather than a dominant character — without the assertive oak imprint associated with Bordeaux and similar styles. After élevage, the wine rests an additional year in bottle before release, a discipline that underscores the domaine's commitment to presenting the wine in a state of genuine readiness. The Beaujolais Blanc, a 100% Chardonnay, is crafted to emphasize fruit expression and minerality, with an approachable profile suited to apéritif occasions. Across the range, the cellar approach is calibrated to let the distinctiveness of each terroir and cru speak without unnecessary intervention.

Philosophy

Domaine Dufour's guiding ethos is one of honest, evolving stewardship. Florent has spoken of the domaine not as a fixed destination but as a continued process of growth — exploring new winemaking styles while simultaneously working to reduce dependence on phytosanitary products and herbicides. This is not merely an aspiration: the domaine has already restructured four to five hectares to enable a return to tillage techniques, mechanical tractor work, and vine trellising — practices that eliminate the need for chemical ground management. The ambition for the years ahead is to extend this restructuring to as many parcels as possible. At the same time, the domaine holds to a grounded, communicative approach to its wines, valuing accessibility and conviviality — embodied most clearly in the Brouilly, which the team describes as the region's Swiss Army knife: a wine so versatile at table that it is the bottle people reach for when in doubt.

History

Domaine Dufour represents the second generation of family winemaking. Before Florent assumed responsibility for the domaine approximately twenty years ago, the estate was guided by his father, who laid the foundations on which the current chapter is built. The transition from father to son has preserved the domaine's continuity of place and identity while opening the door to a more deliberate exploration of viticultural and winemaking possibilities. Today, Florent steers the domaine through a period of considered change, balancing the inheritance of established terroirs and cuvées with an active program of vineyard restructuring and a forward-looking commitment to more sustainable viticulture.

Wines to know

Domaine Dufour presents three core cuvées, each anchored in a distinct appellation and terroir. The Beaujolais Blanc is a 100% Chardonnay sourced from granite hillside parcels at Salar Bussona near Villefranche-sur-Saône — a site where Domaine Dufour works in singular isolation. The wine is built around vivid fruit expression and a pronounced mineral character, making it a natural partner for oysters and apéritif occasions. The Brouilly is drawn from the large cru appellation spreading across the slopes of Mont Brouilly, including the distinguished lieu-dit of Pisse-Vieille. Approachable and food-friendly across a wide range of dishes, it occupies the role of what the domaine calls the regional Swiss Army knife — the bottle opened when no other choice seems obvious. The Régnié Clos de Ponchon is the domaine's most considered red, sourced from enclosed parcels around the Château de Ponchon. The sheltered microclimate of the clos delivers concentration and ripeness that warrants a short élevage of six to eight months in used oak barrels, followed by a further year in bottle before release — a wine of structure, patience, and quiet depth.
