Domaine de Marchandise

Stone farmhouse courtyard with cypress tree and tiled roofs, characteristic of a southern French wine domaine, on a clear sunny day.

Domaine de Marchandise is a family-owned estate nestled in the heart of Provence, the sun-drenched region of southern France celebrated for its luminous landscapes and centuries-old winemaking tradition. Producing wines across the Côtes de Provence appellation for more than fifty years, the domaine has earned a quiet, enduring reputation for quality that is rooted in place and shaped by the people who tend it. Under the stewardship of winemaker Marine Chauvier, who oversees every aspect of viticulture and vinification, Domaine de Marchandise continues to express the singular character of its terroir through wines that are precise, generous, and unmistakably Provençal.

Terroir

The vineyards of Domaine de Marchandise occupy a distinctive site within the Côtes de Provence appellation, where the soils are classified as argilo-calcaire — a clay-limestone composition studded with stones that drain freely, stress the vines beneficially, and concentrate mineral complexity in the fruit. The rocky subsoil retains warmth through the night while reflecting light back onto the canopy during the day, encouraging even and thorough ripening. The estate benefits fully from the Mediterranean climate that defines this corner of Provence: long, hot, and dry summers build phenolic richness and aromatic intensity in the grape skins, while mild winters allow the vines to recover gently before the cycle begins again. The combination of minerally, well-drained soils and a reliably sunny growing season creates conditions in which the classic grape varieties of the region — Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, and Mourvèdre — achieve a natural balance between ripeness and freshness.

History

Domaine de Marchandise was founded more than fifty years ago by two brothers, with Marine Chauvier's uncle and her father together establishing the estate in Provence. The domaine has remained resolutely within the family across the decades, passing from the founding generation to the next without losing the continuity of vision that gives the wines their character. Marine Chauvier eventually assumed full responsibility for both the vineyard and the cellar, taking over from her father and becoming the primary force behind the domaine's wines. The founding uncle remains involved in the life of the estate, as does Marine's brother-in-law, ensuring that the accumulated knowledge and attachment to the land built over half a century continues to inform every vintage.

Wines to know

The Côtes de Provence Rosé stands as one of the domaine's most celebrated expressions. Assembled from Grenache, Cinsault, and Syrah, it presents a delicate pink hue and a refined aromatic profile marked by raspberry and citrus. Elegant and lively, it is a wine suited equally to afternoon aperitifs and languid summer meals. The Côtes de Provence Rouge offers a contrasting richness. Built on a blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre, it is full-bodied and structured, carrying notes of blackberry and blackcurrant alongside a subtle thread of spice. The depth and savory character of this rouge make it a natural companion to robust dishes such as grilled lamb or slow-cooked beef.
