Understanding Burgundy: A Beginner’s Map
March 12, 2026
Burgundy is the world’s most precise expression of place. Two grapes — Pinot Noir and Chardonnay — are grown across a thin ribbon of limestone, yet the wines change dramatically from one parcel, or climat, to the next.
The hierarchy runs from regional Bourgogne, up through village wines, then Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards. But the name on the label matters less than the grower behind it. A thoughtful family domaine making village wine often outshines a négociant’s Premier Cru.
At La Cave we import from growers like Lucien & Fanny Rocault, who farm small parcels by hand. Start there: village-level wines from a great grower are the truest, best-value way into Burgundy.
