Feature: Domaine Kox in Luxembourg
One group of LaCave’s specially selected, top-quality wines originate in the vineyards of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, a tiny nation landlocked between two larger producers, France and Germany. While both French and German are official languages of this small country, Luxembourgers enjoy a unique culture, lifestyle, and locally produced wines.
And, like their neighbors, Luxembourg winemakers enjoy a long and glorious tradition of vineyard management and winemaking.
Domaine Kox, located in the picturesque village of Remich beside the famous Moselle River, has been managing and producing excellent wines from local grapes since the early 1900s. The company has grown substantially under the current expert leadership and professional winemaking skills of family descendent Laurent Kox.
Passion, Respect for the Vineyard, and Competence
The Kox Family and team members strive to adapt to the latest technologies in vineyard management and winemaking while sticking to and even reviving some of the old methods. In their words, Domain Kox employs “unique know-how combining tradition and modernity.”
Domain Kox produces a wide range of highly respected wine, specializing in Riesling, Sparkling Wines, and a revival of an almost forgotten red variety, Saint Laurent.
Each of these delicious varietals is available from the wine merchants at La Cave in Napa, CA.
Domain Kox Retro-Innovation: The Kvevris
Throughout history, traditional production methods have been replaced by more efficient or faster solutions. Consistent with Domain Kox’s traditional-modern approach, in 2014, the winery decided to experiment with a long-abandoned process once used by winemakers of the nation of Georgia.
The process involves placing the new wines into massive jugs or “kvevris” that are filled and buried in the ground to ferment and store until bottling. This long-abandoned process uses minimal sulfur (thus lower sulfite content) in the final product and produces high-quality, long-lasting wines.
Domain Kox uses these amphora-shaped vessels for the production of many of their Riesling and Pinot Blanc varieties.
Domain Kox: Award-Winning Wines
In recent years, several Domain Kox wines have earned top grades among French wines and others from around Europe. Some of these are:
· The 2018 Riesling, Remich Primerberg, was featured in the prestigious LeGuide Hachette, one of the most famous European wine guides.
· Falstaff Wine Guide, Sparking Edition, awarded Domain Kox Cuvée Rhäifrensch First Place with 92 points after a blind taste comparison.
· During the 2020 10th International PIWI Wine Award, Domain Kox received the Gold Medal for their 2019 Cabernet Blanc. This award follows on the heels of consecutive wins in 2017 and 2018.
While French wines and grapes have tended to dominate much of the European wine industry accolades, Luxembourg production from Domaine Kox has found a significant, award-winning niche on the global stage.
